You won’t believe what Argan Oil from a prehistoric tree means to you

Sunday 03 November 2013

I’m not sure how many of you had a look at the Christmas Grotto since my letter on Friday, but if you have you may have noticed something very different.

In amongst the interesting gifts, exclusive Christmas cards and beautifully crafted journals there is something as old as time itself – the oil from a tree species which is over 65 million years old.

Yes, I have been fortunate enough to be able to get a supplier of real pure Argan Oil, something I have been trying to do for the last five years, and finally I can now offer you the true ‘liquid gold of Morocco.’
You may be familiar with our Argan Oil capsules that contain pure virgin oil and have proved to be highly effective for joint pain, reducing blood pressure and generally providing a tonic for the body.

In fact, it was because of these best selling supplements that I was so keen to find a culinary version.

You see I knew that despite the hype around olive oil for cooking and dressing salads that there was something even better, healthier and tastier available – and now I can offer you the chance to join me.

Why get so excited about Argan Oil?

Quite simple Argan oil is one of the rarest and healthiest oils in the world.

It comes from the Argania Spinosa tree which only grows in a small region in the Southwest of Morocco. The tree, being one of the oldest surviving plant species’ in the world with a history of over 65 million years, is a UNESCO protected plant.

Argan oil has been made for centuries by the Berber people who reside in many North African countries. They dry out the Argan fruit after harvest, peel off its skin and crack the stone inside the fruit open to extract the seed which is then toasted and cold pressed.

The production of 1 litre of Argan oil involves 30kg of the fruit and 15 hours of hand labour, which accounts for why it is so rare and exclusive and why the best isn’t processed by machines which can contaminate the purity of the product and taint the finished oil.

Traditionally, it is used not only for its intense, nutty flavour but also for its exceptional health benefits. Nicknamed the ‘liquid Gold of Morocco’, Argan oil has up to three times the amount of Vitamin E of olive oil or avocado oil and is a cancer preventive.

Studies have proven it lowers cholesterol within two weeks if you have a table spoon each day. Therefore, it is commonly used as a health supplement.

From a chefs perspective the oil has a low smoking point and thus offers itself to being used as a finishing oil. It is delicious in salad dressings and can be drizzled over risotto, steamed vegetables, seafood, goat’s cheese and even adds a nutty note to sweet dishes like porridge and waffles.

For these reasons many of the celebrity chefs have woken up to just how good the oil is, and the likes of Jenny Morris and Yotam Ottolenghi are beginning to rave about its qualities.

There was even a big article in the Sunday Telegraphs Stella magazine a few weeks ago so there is a real buzz around this special oil right now – which makes it the perfect gift to give this year.

Here’s why this oil is the best out there

When I’ve mentioned Argan oil before I have always made an issue about how important the oil is to the women’s collectives who produce it, and why I would only purchase product that I knew helped these local schemes.

That’s why it has taken me so long to find the right supplier for our oil, and I am pleased to show you the guarantee I have from Arganic Ltd;
Arganic Ltd. is proud to support over 600 Berber women in Morocco who, lacking access to formal education, have very restricted means to gain independence. Furthermore;

• Our kernels are freshly pressed immediately after extraction and never stored to ensure maximum flavor and nutrient value.

• Our oil is 100% pure organic Argan oil so you know you are getting the real deal with all the benefits.

• We proudly operate in an ethical manner and pay the producers fairly in order to benefit everyone involved.

• Nothing is wasted in the process of production, the dried Argan fruit is fed to animals, the hard inner shell is sold to cosmetic companies, and the pulp formed in extraction is used as fuel for fires.

• Our oil is traceable and we even know which tree each bottle has come from.

So there you have it, after many years of research, e-mails and letter writing I am proud to be able to offer you the very best natural and ethical Argan oil, something that will add healthy flavour to your food.

But this remarkable oil also has other uses and I am delighted to have the chance to offer you specialised products for cosmetic use in addition to the culinary ones.

As part of the Christmas grotto I have Argan oil moisturisers and cleansers which means that you can be fantastic inside and outside too as a result of a tree that grew at the time the dinosaurs walked the earth.
