  • How this asthma remedy REALLY works: (GREEN LIPPED MUSSELS)

Following on from one of my recent letters concerning breathing disorders I had several people mail me about asthma remedies.

This inflammatory condition of the upper airways is one of those that afflicts lots of people, and varies in its severity – but the cause isn’t known.

In some cases the fault is laid at the door of air pollution, in others to genetic predisposition and others to allergic reactions to modern life – maybe to something as simple as cooking oil.

In a minute I’ll tell you what I’ve found out about this unlikely link, but first let’s look at this severe and debilitating condition – more importantly one which non sufferers often fail to understand.

In fact, Asthma UK, the biggest charity working in this arena has recently published an excellent report highlighting how those with severe forms of this condition are subjected to discrimination.

In the report I read the following quote from a sufferer “My asthma became severe in my early twenties – it was devastating. I should have been out having fun. It was like someone had got a gun, shot my knees off and said now your life is over”.

Just how devastating must that be?

Treatment modalities invariably rely on long term steroid use, with its associated risks – however, those risks pale into insignificance alongside the alternative... life without breath tends to be short.

Now all of this set me thinking... if this is about inflammation surely there are natural ways to deal with this... and then the Good Life readers came to my rescue.

Give it some mussel and relieve your joint pain AND asthma

I don't know if you remember a few months back when I talked about green lipped mussels?

The powerful oils from these New Zealand mussels are a natural anti-inflammatory. This means they can help relieve all kinds of joint pain.

The website I showed you at the time boasted a series of free reports, PDFs and other scientific bits and pieces showing the clinical trials into green lipped mussels. They're all here if you didn't read that issue, or you simply want to take another a look:

[GREEN LIPPED MUSSELS]

A number of Good Lifers who visited this website noticed that green lipped mussels are also known as a potential remedy for asthma.

'But how does this work?' was a common question asked.

Well, put simply, it's all down to the intense levels of omega 3 fatty acids in green lipped mussel oils. I'll explain...

A dangerous imbalance in our diets

The general consensus these days - and evinced by writers such as Michael Pollan (In Defence of Food) and Colin T. Campbell (The China Study) - is that our western diet is far too high in Omega-6 fats.

These are fats you get from high levels of vegetable oils in modern cooking processes.

This isn't to say that omega-6s are bad for you - they're actually ESSENTIAL for good health - it's just that they need to be properly balanced out by an intake of omega 3 fatty acids.

Omega 3 fats come largely from fish, seafood, broccoli, cabbage, and walnuts and flaxseeds.

They are either missing from our diet altogether... we don't eat them in big enough amounts... or the versions of these foods that we DO eat are heavily depleted in omega 3 because of modern 'high yield' farming methods.

Many experts believe that the ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 should 1:1. But the average western diet has a ratio of 20:1.

That's a scary thought isn't it?

When you think of the term 'imbalance', I tend to think of a seesaw slightly tilted.

But in the case of omega 3 and omega 6, it's like a seesaw with a garden gnome at one end and Giant Haystacks squatted on the other end.

It's this huge imbalance which is being linked to many systemic inflammatory problems.

Here's where green lipped mussels come in...

By taking a green mussel extract, you can dramatically shift the balance of fats in your body.

Think of the garden gnome growing, Giant Haystacks shrinking, and the seesaw quickly tilting the other way.

The intense boost of omega 3 can help reduce the body's natural inflammatory response to viruses and allergic reactions. This can be a great aid in helping to control asthma symptoms. Because in asthma, it's the inflammation of the airways that causes the
breathing problems.

Of course, ordinary fish oils are a good source of these omega 3s. But the king of all fish oils is the green lipped mussel. It lives in sun-baked waters packed with plankton that contain extraordinarily high levels of antioxidants.

Take a look at the story of how the Maori fisherman who lived on these mussels enjoyed almost total freedom from arthritis:

100 times more potent than fish oil

The best way I've found to get all the benefits of green lipped mussels is to try a quality extract like Lyprinol.

This has been shown to be:

  • 100 times more potent than EPA Max (fish oil)
  • 125 times more potent than original freeze
    dried mussel powder
  • 175 times more potent than evening primrose oil
  • 175 times more potent than salmon Oil
  • 200 times more potent than flax Oil

And because of the extraction process it can be eaten by anyone suffering from shellfish intolerance.

There's no fishy smell or aftertaste. And you only have to take 1-2 capsules a day.

Hopefully today's email will give you some ideas of  how to keep your airways healthy this summer. I know how much havoc this season can play on sufferers of hay fever, asthma and other allergies.

Yours, as always
