I also have a personal account, but I keep my settings private – just close friends and family, really.

Bearing in mind I write my thoughts, rants and obsessions in these old-fashioned emails twice every week, I don’t feel as much need to express myself on social media.

However, the occasional glimpse into Facebook can be interesting because I get to see everyone’s common gripes and niggles exposed.

And over the past few weeks it was ALL about the heatwave.

Must be a British thing but…


It’s as if we’re in a collective meltdown as our planet hurtles towards the sun, with posts like this…

“Can’t get to sleep in the heat – help!”

“Okay, I’ve had enough now, when will it stop?”

“This weather has turned me into an alcoholic.”

“My poor garden is dead.”

“I can’t leave the house. Too hot.”

This got me thinking about the unsung horrors of hot summers.

When hot weather goes BAD

See, I’ve written quite a few letters over the years about getting out in the sunshine for Vitamin D… and how lots of sunlight is good for mental health… or how good weather means you can get out and walk, swim, garden and do other things that keep you happy and healthy.

But what happens in a heatwave?

Well, it can cause quite a few problems.

So I thought I’d list them with a few of my tips on avoiding them or coping with them.

  • Insomnia
Hot nights can lead to tossing and turning and sweating into the sheets.

You try to open a window, but for many people wide open windows mean street noise from traffic… people on the way home from pubs… noisy kids, neighbours having parties or arguing… blaring tellies from dozens of other open windows.

So now you have heat and sweat and noise and feelings of despair and rage and “aaaaarrrgh”!

Worse, lack of sleep has a knock-on effect. Grumpiness, lack of concentration and low energy, making work and relationships difficult. If it continues for months rather than days it becomes chronic insomnia, which has a bad effect on blood pressure and heart health – many people even put on weight.

My tip…

Obviously keep the bedroom as cool as possible. But – D’oh! – you know that already!

You can also try something to help you relax and sleep more deeply. Taking a magnesium supplement is one option, as there’s a strong link between magnesium deficiency and insomnia. You can get our recommended supplement here.

Lemon balm has a calming effect when you’re experiencing sleep problems, so that’s worth a try each evening.
Also try barley grass powder in water before you go to bed, as it gives your body a better alkaline balance, helping you feel more restful.

  • Sweating
This can not only lead to embarrassing patches when you turn up to work or social occasions, but it can cause chaffing and rashes.

My tip…

Get a cotton ball and rub apple cider vinegar on your sweaty patches. It acts as an astringent which removes bacteria and closes your pores. Leave it overnight and wash it off the next morning.

Or alternatively, there’s my old favourite, the lemon. Rub half a lemon on your underarms or mix lemon juice with baking soda and rub it on with a cotton ball.

Also, drink a glass of tomato juice each day (or pack them into salads); tomatoes help control excessive sweating.

  • Dry mouth
Heat can lower the production of saliva, making your mouth dry and uncomfortable. Dry mouth can lead to bacteria build up, causing bad breath.

My tip…

It’s the obvious one really. Drink more water. I’d also reduce your caffeine intake and replace those cups of coffee with herbal teas.

  • Hay fever
This year an earlier heat wave in April created what experts call a ‘pollen bomb’, caused by releases from birch, plane and oak trees, with 20 million people estimated to be affected. So hay fever could be adding to your woes.

My tip…

You can also try smearing Vaseline around your nostrils to trap the pollen.

  • Sunburn
This is not just horribly painful, it can lead to skin cancer. Seven people a day die of it and rates are rising, particularly in areas of the country like South Wales and Cornwall where surfing is increasingly popular.

In the latest figures there’s been a 58.3% increase in cases of melanoma from 2003-2015, according to Public Health Wales.

My tip…

Stay out of direct sunlight for most of the day. Get a hat. Sit under an umbrella. Wear loose fitting clothing when the sun gets too much. Just use common sense!

If you are going to be exposed to a lot of sun, use a natural, safe suntan lotion that doesn’t contain parabens, alcohol, lanolin, methylisothiazolinone, phthalates or artificial additives. Like this one from Green People.

And as I recommended the other week, when you have been out in the sun use Emu Oil to soothe your skin. This stuff is so powerful Australian Aborigines used it to treat their sun-damaged skin after a gruelling day’s hunting in the outback.

Of course, you might be reading this in your bikini or Speedos, blithely sipping on a Pina colada, thinking “Blimey, Ray, I don’t know what all the fuss is about” – in which case, ENJOY IT WHILE IT LASTS!
