“Mr Collins, the dentist can see you now.”

The few words that have always struck fear into my heart.

I really don’t like my teeth being messed with and the time I spend in the waiting room are some of the most torturous minutes of my life.

You know how it is, that smell of antiseptic and mouthwash, the receptionist taking calls from patients and always the high-pitched sounds of the drill.

I always try to bury myself in a magazine, avidly reading about the lives and loves of a celebrity, the major features of a 1952 MG or how to train an apple tree to fit an espalier – anything but think about what is to come.

Sitting amongst the other doomed individuals last week I rifled through the collection of reading materials and found myself with a women’s fashion magazine – being the only thing that caught my attention.

Leafing through I was amazed at the number of adverts offering various skin treatments, creams and tonics all aimed at rejuvenating or anti-ageing.

Each ad talked about some magic element which would turn wrinkles into smooth skin; hydrating liposomes, activated micro-dermal agents and flex-tensor technology to name but a few.

As the nurse called me in to see my tormentor my head was buzzing with all these amazing sounding chemicals, right up until the light was shone in my eyes and the mirror and prod administered to my mouth.

Ten minutes later I was back in the waiting room having received a clean bill of health and a series of compliments about how healthy my teeth and gums looked (thank you Dr Heff) and I was booking the next check-up for six months’ time.

Taking the bus home, I began to ponder the whole topic of the effects of age on a body and how the skin provides some indication of what might be happening elsewhere.

How can you protect vital tissues from the effects of time?

We are all gradually growing older and as we do so the way our bodies function changes.

It is tempting to think that we are gradually wearing out, but that is not how it happens as we have the inherent ability for our important working parts to repair and develop over time.

These are the processes that the skin preparation ads were trying to suggest could be influenced by their particular products, but the reality is that repair and change is dependent on only one element – collagen.

This is essentially the building block and glue that hold everything together and impart some degree of resilience in the body, and without it our cells and tissues simply cannot regenerate or repair.

Now, some of the products I saw in the magazine made reference to collagen and seemed to imply that it could be viewed as an important and active part of their formulation but smearing it onto the skin is perhaps the least effective way of providing it to your body.

But I don’t want these types of adverts to make you think that collagen is only important for your skin or to prevent the signs of ageing – it really is vital to much more than that, and whilst I may have started to think about it as a result of seeing it in a women’s magazine, us chaps can’t afford to ignore it either.

Collagen has many major effects on health including:

  • Controlling the painful symptoms associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid variants including ankylosing spondylitis and psoriatic arthritis.
  • Repairing and regenerating cartilage in joints, and organs following surgery.
  • Improving skin flexibility – reducing wrinkles and improving tone.
  • Reducing stretch marks and cellulite.
  • Improving circulation and reducing blood pressure.
  • Improving eyesight even reducing bloodshot or yellowing eyes.
  • Losing weight, and preventing it coming back again.
  • Reducing cholesterol levels, without resorting to statins.
  • Regaining sexual energy and libido, which may not be your prime concern but it is a fact of life that all our systems slow as we age.

A truly simple solution

Topping up our collagen levels is something that we all need to think about as it is thought that from the age of 25 your body loses collagen at a rate of 1.5% per annum, so by the age of 35 your body will have lost 15% and by 45, 30%.
