Today I want to spell out a very simple, effective and rather enjoyable way for all of us to build a barrier against viral, bacterial and fungal infections.

The key factors you have to demand of your honey

Knowing that the honey you buy is produced in the home of the wild Manuka bushes is a guarantee that you are getting the very best.

Purity is the first of the two key measures you have to ensure – but when you are faced with supermarket shelves and internet pages packed with differing brands all claiming to be pure, powerful and honest, how can you be sure?

Well that’s why I have spent over a decade hunting down the best in small scale and local producers, but now I have a supplier who can properly demonstrate their purity.

They do this by measuring the percentage of Manuka pollen in the honey – a simple test but one that no other producer bothers to do and so can’t ensure they can stand by their claims.

Because the honey is harvested in natural conditions and bees are foragers, there will always be a small variation in pollen, but our honey is as close to 100% purity as it is possible to get.

Next on your check list is the need for the honey to be absolutely raw, as close as possible to the state it left the hive in.

I'd like to warn you about a potential problem with buying any old Manuka honey from the supermarket.

Food companies have been eager to get in on the action. The big price ticket on the jars is too alluring for them to resist.

Legally I can't name the specific brands, but some big players have released versions of Manuka honey, all boasting the same health benefits. Trouble is, where honey has been over-treated and left in poor storage conditions, it will not retain its natural enzymes.

Worse, many of these honeys are pasteurised and heated to over 70 degrees – in some known cases, up to 80 degrees. This gives those delicate enzymes a hammering and leaves the honey fairly useless as a natural remedy.

It is really important to realise then that all Manuka honeys are not the same.

If you want to guarantee that your Manuka honey is the real deal, then you need to know where your honey comes from and how it has been treated.

Obviously, tracking honey is difficult to do. I don't expect for a minute that you'll spend hours investigating the provenance of every single jar you buy.

Fair enough. Me neither.

  • Treating gum disease: A study published in the April 2004 issue of the journal of the International Academy of Periodontology found that Manuka honey may help reduce plaque and treat gingivitis.
  • Reducing asthma and rhinitis symptoms: In a 2013 edition of the Journal of Family Practice a team showed how effective Manuka honey was in treating childhood asthma and respiratory tract infections, aiding sleep.
